Cigars Output to Increase in Las Tunas, Cuba
By Hernan Bosch

Las Tunas, Cuba, Feb 22, (P26).- For the first time in history, cigar manufacturers in eastern Las Tunas province expect to turn out a record output of two million units for export during 2006.

Although tobacco is usually associated with the western part of the island, over the past few Las Tunas has seen a significant increase both in the growth of the leaf and the production of cigars.

In 1996, farmers in Las Tunas joined in the national effort to raise the production of this valuable export and since 2000 they have been able to plant at least 1,340 hectares of land each year.

Thus Las Tunas has placed fourth among the provinces with the largest amount of tobacco planted, only surpassed by traditional tobacco growing territories such as Pinar del Río, Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara.

Last year local factories produced over 13 million cigars for domestic consumption and half a million destined for export.

Cuba has a nationwide overall capacity to make over 160 million exportable cigars and some 190 million for domestic consumption.
Auf der Landkarte der Tabakanbaugebiete der Indiana University ist Las Tunas noch ein weisser Fleck.
